Psychological Assessment
Group Discussion (GD)
What is Checked
The **Group Discussion (GD)** is a critical GTO indoor task designed to evaluate candidate suitability across a range of Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).
- Reasoning & Logic: Depth of knowledge, ability to analyze complex national issues, and clarity of expressions.
- Social Suitability: Cooperation, adaptability, receptiveness to feedback, and ability to stay calm under group friction.
- Group Influence: Self-confidence, capability to guide a straying discussion back onto standard tracks, and voice modulation.
Methodology
- Dual Discussions: Candidates undergo two consecutive Group Discussions back-to-back.
- GD 1: Candidates select one topic from two options offered by the GTO.
- GD 2: GTO assigns a mandatory topic. - Group Format: Conducted in a semi-circle seating arrangement. No leader is nominated; all candidates participate equally.
- Duration: Exactly 15 minutes (900 seconds) is given for each discussion.
- Structure: Every topic is broken down into 3 discrete leads representing different aspects of the debate.
Advice to Candidates
- Initiative: Initiate the discussion only if you have solid, fact-based knowledge. Otherwise, enter early (2nd or 3rd speaker) with fresh arguments.
- Polite Vocabulary: Never raise your voice, look aggressive, or point fingers. Practice saying: "I respect your view, Candidate 6, but..." or "Building on Candidate 2's point...".
- Introduce Facts: Do not speak in vague generalities. Support your arguments with data, statistics, and logical deductions.
- Cooperation: Help struggling group members or guide a chaotic discussion back to the leads. GTOs highly value collaborative team players.
- Eye Contact: Always address the group in a circular fashion. Never look at the GTO during the active discussion.
