Interview Techniques
The Personal Interview is a structured conversational test conducted to evaluate your mental alertness, honesty, values, and Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).
The PIQ & Conversational Model
The Interviewing Officer (IO) uses your **Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ)** as a conversational roadmap. The IO assesses whether your verbal claims align with your psychologist dossier projections and GTO outdoor performance.
- Verbal Congruence: Are you telling the truth or reciting pre-coached answers?
- General Awareness: Practical knowledge of global geopolitics, Indian defense tech, and current events.
- Mental Stamina: Resolving rapid, successive questions without losing focus.
A Comprehensive Information Question (CIQ) wraps 8-10 personal questions in a single conversational block. The IO tests if you can listen intently, process logical threads, and answer in sequence without prompting.
Comprehensive Question (CIQ) Drills
Analyze standard CIQs and model advice:
- Describe your academic path from 10th to graduation.
- What were your scores, favorite subjects, and teachers you liked/disliked?
- Detail your participation in sports and extra-curricular events.
- What achievements or leadership responsibilities did you hold?
The IO checks for consistency. Explain drop in marks logically (e.g., streaming shifts or focus on athletic grids) without giving lazy excuses.
Verbal & Physical Posture Checklist
Ensure correct body language and avoid nervous tells during the PI:
Sit straight with your back resting comfortably against the chair. Avoid slouching forward (projects submissiveness or fatigue) or leaning too far back (projects arrogance). Keep your chest open to convey confidence.
Place both hands flat and relaxed on your thighs. Avoid locking your fingers too tightly, scratching your knees, playing with clothing buttons, or gesturing aggressively. Fidgeting represents high anxiety.
Maintain a steady, relaxed eye contact with the Interviewing Officer (IO). Look him in the eyes when speaking and when listening. A gentle, warm smile projects liveliness (OLQ 12) even under grilling questions.
Keep both feet flat on the floor, spaced at shoulder width. Do not cross your legs or shake/tap your feet continuously, which is the most common indicator of pent-up nervous tension.
Key Tactical Advice for Candidate
- Speak Slowly: Keep your speaking pace controlled. Speak in short, structured, grammatically correct sentences to express thoughts cleanly.
- Never Bluff: If you do not know the answer to a technical general awareness question, look the IO in the eye and say: "Sir, I am not aware of this, but I will check it on my return."
- Stay Calm: The IO will intentionally try to grill you on weaknesses or academic drops. Treat it as a stress-tolerance test, not a personal insult.
